What Is a Satha (سطحة)? Flatbed Tow Trucks in Saudi Arabia Explained

What Does "Satha" Mean?

If you drive in Saudi Arabia, sooner or later you will hear the word satha (سطحة). It simply means a flatbed tow truck — a truck with a flat, hydraulic bed that tilts down so a car can be winched fully on top of it. When your car breaks down, has an accident, or needs to be moved anywhere in the Kingdom, the satha is what comes to rescue it.

Quick answer: A satha (سطحة) is a flatbed recovery truck. Your car rides fully on the truck bed with no wheels touching the road — the safest way to tow any vehicle, especially automatic, AWD, and luxury cars. A within-city satha in Saudi Arabia typically costs SAR 200–450.

How a Satha Works

  1. The driver tilts and lowers the hydraulic bed to ground level.
  2. Your car is pulled up by an electric winch (ونش) — even if the engine is dead or a wheel is damaged.
  3. The bed levels out, the car is strapped down at four points, and off it goes.

The whole loading process usually takes 10–15 minutes.

When Do You Need a Satha?

  • Breakdown: engine failure, overheating, transmission problems — very common in Saudi summer heat.
  • Accident: the car cannot be driven safely, or the police ask for it to be removed.
  • Dead battery or flat tire with no spare — sometimes a jump start or tire change on the spot is enough, but if not, the satha takes you to the workshop.
  • Buying or selling a car: moving a non-registered or non-running car between cities.
  • Luxury and low cars: sports cars and lowered vehicles should only travel by flatbed.

Satha vs Normal Tow Truck

A traditional hook-and-chain truck lifts two wheels and drags the other two on the road. That is fine for some old cars, but for modern automatics and AWD vehicles it can damage the transmission and drivetrain. A flatbed carries the whole car — zero drag, zero risk. How Much Does a Satha Cost in Saudi Arabia?

  • Within the city (up to ~10 km): SAR 200–300
  • Longer city moves (10–30 km): SAR 250–450
  • Intercity (e.g. Riyadh → Dammam): roughly SAR 1,100–1,600
