Car Breakdown on a Saudi Highway? 7 Steps to Stay Safe and Get Recovered Fast

Breakdown on the Highway — Don't Panic

Saudi highways are long, fast, and in summer, brutally hot. A breakdown on the Riyadh–Dammam (Route 40) or Jeddah–Makkah highway is stressful, but the right steps keep you safe and get a recovery truck (satha) to you quickly.

Quick answer: Pull fully onto the hard shoulder, hazards on, triangle 50–100 m behind the car, everyone out and away from traffic, then WhatsApp your live location + car model + problem to a recovery service. For emergencies call 911; for roadside security call 996.

The 7 Steps

1. Get off the road — completely. Coast onto the hard shoulder as far right as possible. Never stop in a live lane, even "just for a minute."

2. Hazards on, triangle out. Switch on hazard lights immediately. Place your warning triangle 50–100 metres behind the car so highway-speed traffic has time to react.

3. Get everyone out — away from traffic. Exit from the passenger side and stand behind the barrier, well away from the car. Keep water with you — in summer heat this is a safety issue, not a comfort issue.

4. Know your location. Open Google Maps or WhatsApp live location. Note the nearest kilometre marker or exit number — dispatch is twice as fast when the driver knows exactly where you are.

5. Call the right numbers. For accidents or danger, call 911. For highway security patrol, 996. For the car itself, contact a 24/7 car recovery service — share live location, car make/model, and what happened.

6. Agree the price before dispatch. A professional service gives you a fixed price and ETA on WhatsApp within minutes. Avoid random tow trucks that stop and "negotiate" on the roadside — this is where overcharging happens.

7. Decide the destination. Nearest workshop? Your dealer in the city? Home? Tell the recovery company once — the price is calculated to that exact drop-off.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Standing behind or beside the car while waiting — always behind the barrier.
  • Trying to flag down passing cars on a 120 km/h highway.
  • Accepting an unmarked truck without a price — get the fixed quote first.
  • Leaving the car unlocked if you accept a lift — take documents and valuables.

Summer Breakdowns: A Saudi Reality

Most highway breakdowns here are heat-related: cooling systems, batteries, and tires. Before any long trip, check coolant, battery age (2–3 years max in this climate), and tire pressure. See typical towing prices so you know what a fair recovery quote looks like before you ever need one.

We cover all major corridors — Riyadh–Dammam, Jeddah–Makkah, Makkah–Madinah — from both ends, with recovery units in Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Makkah, and Madinah.
