Umrah in Autumn and Winter: A Transport Plan for Families and Groups

Planning Umrah between October and March with family or a group: arrival airports, the order of cities, vehicle sizes, Miqat stops, Ziyarat days and booking every leg together.

Quick answer

For a family or group Umrah in the cooler months, plan transport as one itinerary: arrival at Jeddah (JED) or Madinah (MED), the transfer between the two holy cities (about 430 km, around 4 hours, with the Miqat stop), a Ziyarat day in each city, and the airport departure. One correctly sized vehicle for each leg — usually an SUV or van, or a coaster for large groups — keeps everyone and the luggage together.

From October, as the summer heat eases, more families travel for Umrah. Cooler days make the walk to the Haram, Tawaf in the open courtyard and Ziyarat visits much easier for children and older relatives. Popular weeks — school holidays, and the run-up to Ramadan — get busy, so it pays to book hotels and transport together. For month-by-month crowds and weather, see the best time to visit Makkah.

Step 1: choose your order of cities

PlanArriveThenLeave from
Makkah firstJED → Makkah (~80 km, ~1 hr) in IhramMakkah → Madinah (~430 km, ~4 hr)MED, or back to JED
Madinah firstMED → Madinah hotels (~22 km, ~25 min)Madinah → Makkah (~430 km, ~4 hr) with the Abyar Ali MiqatJED

"Madinah first" lets families settle in before Umrah and puts the Miqat on the road, where it is easy to plan. "Makkah first" means Ihram on the plane and Umrah on day one — harder after a long flight with children. See our Miqat guide.

Step 2: size the vehicle to the luggage

Luggage decides the vehicle more often than the number of people.

Family of 4–6, a case eachFull-size SUVGMC Yukon XL class, up to 7 seats
Family of 5–7 with lots of luggage or a wheelchairVanHyundai Staria / Starex class
8–11 peopleMinibusToyota Hiace class
12–17 peopleCoasterToyota Coaster class

Plan for more luggage on the way home — dates, gifts and Zamzam. Capacities vary by model; see vehicle classes.

Step 3: book the legs together

A family Umrah usually needs four to six transfers:

  1. Arrival — JED to Makkah or MED to the Haram hotels.
  2. Between the cities — Madinah to Makkah or the reverse.
  3. Ziyarat in Makkah — Jabal al-Nour, Jabal Thawr, Mina, Arafat. See Makkah Ziyarat.
  4. Ziyarat in Madinah — Quba, Uhud, Qiblatayn. See Madinah Ziyarat.
  5. Departure — to JED or MED.

Booking them as one plan means the same vehicle size throughout, fixed fares for every leg agreed up front, and one contact for the whole trip.

Step 4: plan around prayer times and the Haram

  • Pickups near the Haram happen at the nearest permitted point; avoid booking a pickup in the minutes after a congregational prayer.
  • Long legs — pick a departure time that gets you to Makkah rested enough for Umrah.
  • Ziyarat works best in the morning, before the midday heat even in winter.

Step 5: share the details that matter

When you book, include: flight numbers (we check them before pickup), hotel names, number of adults and children, children's ages if you need child seats, luggage count, any wheelchair, and whether you need a Miqat stop.

Groups organised by an agency or mosque

For 20, 30 or more pilgrims, several vehicles or coasters can be timed to the same flight and hotel. Send the group list summary and itinerary and we return a written quote for the whole programme. See group transport.

Payment and changes

Each leg has a fixed fare agreed before booking. Pay cash to the driver or by bank transfer; electronic receipts are available on request. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before pickup — useful if flights change.

Common questions

Which airport is better for a family Umrah, Jeddah or Madinah?

Both work. Many families fly into one and out of the other. Madinah first is often gentler with children; Jeddah has more international flights.

Can we keep the same vehicle for the whole trip?

We size every leg to your group and can quote all of them together; tell us if keeping the same driver matters to you.

Do we need a car in Makkah between Umrah and departure?

Usually only for Ziyarat and the airport. Most of the time in Makkah is spent between the hotel and the Haram, on foot.
