Doing Business in the Kingdom
Saudi Arabia's economy is diversifying rapidly, attracting business travelers to Riyadh (the political and financial capital), Jeddah (the commercial hub), and Dammam (the energy center). Understanding local business etiquette is crucial for success.
1. Dress Code
- For Men: A traditional business suit and tie is entirely appropriate for Western expats and visitors. Saudi men will typically wear the traditional Thobe with a Ghutra (headdress).
- For Women: The dress code has relaxed significantly. While the Abaya is no longer legally mandatory for foreign women, modest dressing (covering shoulders and knees) is strictly expected. Loose-fitting business attire is highly recommended. Headscarves are not required for non-Muslim women.
2. Meetings and Greetings
- Punctuality: While you are expected to be on time, do not be surprised if your Saudi counterpart is delayed or if the meeting is interrupted by phone calls or people entering the room. This is a normal part of the local business culture.
- Handshakes: Use your right hand. For male-to-female or female-to-male greetings, wait for the Saudi counterpart to extend their hand first; if they do not, place your hand over your heart and nod slightly.
- Small Talk: Business builds on relationships. Expect to spend the first 10-15 minutes drinking Arabic coffee (Qahwa) and discussing general topics (health, travel, but avoid politics) before getting down to business.
3. Corporate Transport
First impressions matter. Arriving at a meeting in the King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) or a ministry building requires reliable, premium transport.
- Avoid Hailing Cabs on the Street: It's rarely done by business executives.
- Book an Executive Chauffeur: Booking a Luxury Sedan (like a Mercedes S-Class) or an Executive SUV ensures you arrive cool, relaxed, and on time. Our corporate accounts provide daily hire services, meaning the chauffeur waits for you during your meetings, eliminating the stress of finding parking or booking a new ride in the heat of the day.
