Quick answer
Rides from Makkah are priced per route with a fixed fare agreed before booking — Makkah to Jeddah Airport (about 80 km, around an hour), to Madinah (about 430 km, around 4 hours) or to Taif (about 90 km). The price depends on the route, the vehicle and any stops. The bigger practical issue in Makkah is pickup: roads near Masjid al-Haram close to traffic at busy times, so cars collect from the nearest permitted point.

How fares work from Makkah
Almost every booking from Makkah is one of four trips: back to Jeddah Airport for a flight home, on to Madinah, up to Taif, or a Ziyarat tour of the historic sites. Each is priced as a complete trip — one fixed fare agreed before booking, with no meter and no surge. Traffic around the Haram after a prayer, or a 3 a.m. departure for an early flight, does not change the price you agreed.
Makkah routes: distance and drive time
| Route | Distance | Typical drive |
|---|---|---|
| Makkah → Jeddah Airport (JED) | ~80 km | ~1 hr |
| Makkah → Jeddah city | ~85 km | ~1 hr 10 min |
| Makkah → Madinah | ~430 km | ~4 hr |
| Makkah → Madinah Airport (MED) | ~450 km | ~4 hr 20 min |
| Makkah → Taif | ~90 km | ~1 hr 10 min |
| Makkah → King Abdullah Economic City | ~180 km | ~1 hr 50 min |
| Makkah → Riyadh | ~870 km | ~8 hr |
Drive times are for normal traffic. Getting out of central Makkah can take noticeably longer after a congregational prayer, on Fridays, in Ramadan — especially the last ten nights — and in the weeks around Hajj.
Pickups and drop-offs near the Haram
This is the part of Makkah travel that surprises first-time visitors more than the price.
- Roads close to vehicles around Masjid al-Haram at busy times, and some central streets are restricted to permitted vehicles. A private car collects you or drops you at the nearest point it is allowed to reach, which may be a short walk from your hotel lobby.
- Hotels on the Haram's doorstep (the Ajyad and Clock Tower area) are the most affected. Hotels further out, such as in Aziziyah, are easier for cars but further from the mosque.
- Plan around prayer times. Booking a pickup 30–45 minutes after a prayer ends, rather than right at the end of it, usually saves time.

What changes the price
The route and stops
Distance sets the base. Stops — collecting family from a second hotel, a meal stop on the way to Madinah, a detour in Taif — are added when you book so they are in the quote.
The vehicle
Executive sedan, full-size SUV, van, luxury car or minibus, booked through our partner network. Going home from Makkah, luggage is usually heavier than on arrival (gifts, dates, Zamzam), so families who arrived in a sedan often go back in an SUV or van. See vehicle capacities.
Waiting on a Ziyarat tour
A Ziyarat tour is priced for the time the driver spends with you at Jabal al-Nour, Jabal Thawr, Mina, Muzdalifah and Arafat — see our Ziyarat guide.
Departing for Jeddah Airport: timing
For an international flight from JED, most travellers leave Makkah 4 to 5 hours before departure: about an hour on the road plus a buffer for leaving central Makkah, and time at the airport for check-in and security. In Ramadan and the peak Umrah months, leave earlier still. Give us your flight time and terminal when you book and we suggest a pickup time.
Hajj season
In the weeks around Hajj, access to Makkah and the holy sites is regulated and limited to permit holders, and road restrictions are much wider than usual. If you are travelling during this period, tell us your dates early so we can confirm what is possible for your trip.
Payment and cancellation
Fares are paid in cash to the driver or by bank transfer; electronic receipts are available on request. Bookings can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before pickup. Tipping is optional.
Common questions
How much is a taxi from Makkah to Jeddah Airport?
It is quoted for your trip — vehicle, passengers and luggage — and confirmed before you book. The route is about 80 km and usually takes around an hour, though leaving central Makkah can add time.
Can the driver pick us up at the hotel door?
If the road to your hotel is open to vehicles at that time, yes. Near the Haram, the driver meets you at the nearest permitted point and helps with luggage from there.
Is the train better than a car from Makkah to Madinah?
The Haramain train is faster between stations, but both stations are away from the Harams, so you need a car at each end. Families with luggage often prefer a direct car. We compare both in our Madinah–Makkah guide.
