Staying Connected in Saudi Arabia

The moment you land at King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED) in Jeddah, one of your top priorities will be getting a local SIM card. Whether you need to contact your pre-booked chauffeur, navigate via Google Maps, or video call your family, staying connected is essential.

Saudi Arabia has three major telecom operators: STC (Saudi Telecom Company), Mobily, and Zain. All three have kiosks operating 24/7 in the arrivals hall.

1. STC (Saudi Telecom Company)

STC is the largest and most established telecom provider in the Kingdom.

  • Coverage: Excellent. STC has the strongest signal in remote areas, highways (like the Jeddah-Madinah route), and heavily crowded areas like the Haram in Makkah.
  • Packages: They offer dedicated "Ziyarah" (Visitor) packages tailored for 1-4 weeks, including international minutes and generous data allowances.
  • Verdict: Best overall coverage, highly recommended if you plan to travel outside major cities.

2. Mobily

Mobily is the second-largest operator and offers very competitive data packages.

  • Coverage: Very strong in major cities (Jeddah, Makkah, Madinah, Riyadh).
  • Packages: Excellent social media data bundles. If you rely heavily on WhatsApp, Instagram, and Snapchat, Mobily often offers unlimited social media add-ons.
  • Verdict: Best for data-heavy users staying mostly in the main cities.

3. Zain

Zain is known for aggressive pricing and offers the best value for money.

  • Coverage: Good in cities, but can be slightly weaker on remote highways compared to STC.
  • Packages: Often the cheapest high-data options available at the airport.
  • Verdict: Best budget option if you are staying in Makkah/Madinah and want maximum data for your money.

How to Purchase

To buy a SIM card, you will need:

  • Your original Passport with the entry visa.
  • Fingerprint scan: This is a mandatory requirement by Saudi law for all active SIM cards. The kiosk staff will handle this.
  • Payment: Cash (SAR) or Credit/Debit card.

Insider Tip: While there is free Wi-Fi in the airport, it requires an SMS code to activate, which can be tricky if your home SIM doesn't have roaming. Our drivers provide free Wi-Fi hotspot access in our vehicles, allowing you to connect immediately if you skip the airport kiosk lines!
